Rapid escape from the police: drug discovery in St. Pölten shocked!

On June 1, 2025, a 33-year-old man from St. Pölten evaded a police check in Traisen when he was driving at excessive speed on the B20 towards St. Pölten. Despite the police stopping him, the driver fled and continued his journey, which led to a manhunt for him. However, this was initially unsuccessful. About an hour and a half after the incident, at around 3:20 p.m., the fleeing driver was finally stopped as a pedestrian in Rotheau, where he admitted to having consumed drugs. A drug test confirmed this consumption, which led to the immediate temporary removal of his driving license, as 5min.at reports.

After the check at Rotheau, further suspicions emerged, which led to a search of his apartment in St. Pölten. The officers found around 13 grams of marijuana, mostly in the form of flowers, as well as an indoor facility with eight fully flowering cannabis plants that were 90 to 95 cm high. In addition to the temporary confiscation of his driver's license, the drug discovery led to several reports against the man, both to the Lilienfeld district administration and to the St. Pölten public prosecutor's office in accordance with the Narcotic Drugs Act. This extraordinary escape operation and the subsequent drug discovery show how closely the police are confronted with drug-related crime in the region, as also shown by meinkreis.at.

Drug situation in Austria

The incidents surrounding drug consumption and drug production sites are not isolated in Austria. According to the annual “Report on the drug situation in Austria”, commissioned by the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction and the Ministry of Health, the development of illegal drugs is a recurring theme. The report not only covers the epidemiological situation, but also the political and legal framework as well as measures to reduce demand. The report was last updated on January 29, 2024 and provides detailed insights into drug crime and the challenges it poses to society, as shown social ministry.gv.at.

The data collected shows that drug use and trafficking continue to be problematic issues in the region. Incidents like the one in St. Pölten are an indication of the need for increased measures to combat drug-related crime and to educate the population about the risks of drug use. The 33-year-old's behavior could therefore also be understood as a warning signal that underlines the urgency of preventative measures.
