Apricot blossom in the Wachau: Spring magic attracts thousands!

The Wachau is preparing for one of its annual natural spectacles: the apricot blossom. This traditionally takes place in the last week of March to the first week of April and attracts thousands of visitors to the region every year. How OE24 reported that the first blossoms are already visible on some apricot trees, which increases the anticipation of the upcoming festivities.

The flowers are in soft pastel tones and transform the landscape into an enchanting oasis. Blooming usually begins around Krems and extends to Aggsbach Markt and Spitzer Graben. The level of flower development depends heavily on the temperatures at the beginning of March; therefore the exact flowering time is variable.

Visitor flows and traffic

The high number of visitors in the Wachau, especially along the banks of the Danube such as the B3 and B33 roads, is to be expected, which could result in possible delays in traffic. However, the B33 in the Aggsbach-Dorf and Aggstein area has been single-lane again since March 21st after a rockslide closure. The practical use of a live webcam for current information on the traffic situation is recommended.

To avoid the crowds, it is advisable to visit the Wachau and the Apricot Blossom during the week. Hotspots such as Arnsdorf, Schwallenbach and Willendorf on the left bank of the Danube in particular offer excellent opportunities to enjoy the flowers in peace. In order to explore the region extensively, it is also recommended to use public transport. Hourly connections between Krems and Melk as well as the Wachaubahn are ideal for visiting the region stress-free.

An unforgettable experience

The full bloom of the apricot trees is a fleeting spectacle and lasts between three and five days. Please note that the flowers cannot be taken home; therefore photographs are a wonderful way to capture the memory. From the beginning of July, visitors can look forward to fresh apricot dumplings, which are available in the Wachau.

The Wachau doesn't just offer the beauty of the apricot blossom. The region is known for its culinary offerings and wineries to explore. Due to the high number of visitors on weekends, there may be longer waiting times in restaurants, so early eating before 12 p.m. is recommended. Anyone planning the time to visit the apricot blossom should also consider purchasing the so-called Wachau Spring Ticket, which is valid for 14 euros for adults and 7 euros for children on weekends and public holidays until April 27th.

For more information about the current bloom status, social media and a webcam that shows the live status are also good resources. Despite the alternative flowers such as the almond blossom, which blooms one to two weeks earlier, the apricot blossom remains the main focus of many flower showers and nature lovers in the Wachau who want to properly celebrate the entry into spring.
