Krems is trembling to reach the final: Drama in the handball semi-finals!

In the final for the Austrian men's handball title on May 21, 2025 there was a thrilling duel between UHK Krems and HC Linz. Krems won the first game of the “best of three” semifinal with 31:26 and won the series 2-0. The first half ended with an even score of 13:13, but Krems was undeterred and pulled away decisively as the game progressed, after Linz was able to keep up until the score was 24:25.
HC Hard made it to the final on May 20, 2025 with a dramatic 52:51 victory over Fivers Margareten in an unequal seven-meter throw. However, this final was overshadowed by a serious violation of the rules that moved handball fans.

The dramatic error in the seven-meter throw caused a huge stir when the league described the incident as a “bitter human error by the match officials”. After the first round of seven-meter throws, the lead was 48:48, but the game was incorrectly ended early without carrying out another round with five players eligible to play, which would have been necessary according to the game regulations. The result from the game now stands, which means that ALPLA HC Hard will advance to the final series.

The Fivers' protest and decision

The Fivers Margareten had originally announced a protest against the game scoring, but ultimately decided not to do so. ÖHB President Markus Platzer thanked us for this decision, which served the goal of sporting fairness. The Fivers emphasized their commitment to sporting fairness and the responsibility to act as role models for their youth players. They refrained from protesting in order to avoid disrupting everyday league life and ended the season optimistically with an eye on future challenges.

The establishment of fair competition is a concern that is repeatedly highlighted in handball. Fairness is seen as a cornerstone of sport, and equal opportunities and sportsmanship are core values. The Handball Association encourages clubs to implement codes of conduct and provide training for referees to ensure rules are implemented. These aspects are important not only for the athletes themselves, but also for cultivating a respectful community among those involved.

As has already been established, fairness is not just a question of sport, but also contributes to the positive representation of clubs and can attract partnerships with sponsors. The challenges that can arise from pressure on players and coaches make the implementation of behavioral guidelines particularly important. Open communication about fair competition and the clarification of rule violations are also part of the need for lasting improvements in sport.

The upcoming final round between Krems and Hard will be about promoting fair competition - something that the sport of handball urgently needs in order to maintain its integrity and appeal.
