Volunteer work in Lower Austria: Helpers shine in the crisis year

On December 3, 2024, International Volunteer Day is dedicated to impressive volunteer commitment in Lower Austria. Around 1,000 people are actively involved in various projects, be it helping in the social markets or organizing fundraising cultural events. Their support was particularly notable during the flood disaster in the summer, where they helped tirelessly. “Only together are we able to help so many people in need,” emphasizes Volkhilfe President Prof. Ewald Sacher.

Volunteer diversity and support

Volkshilfe Niederösterreich, active since 1947, offers comprehensive support for people in need and has risen to the challenges of the recent crises. “The summer floods and the rising cost of living continue to challenge our helpers,” emphasizes Sacher. With over 5,000 members, rapid and unbureaucratic help is guaranteed. Managing director Gregor Tomschizek explains that there are many ways to get involved in volunteer work, beyond financial support.

To attract new volunteers, Volkshilfe also offers training and further education in the Volunteer Academy. Training courses for social ombudsmen in particular are currently in high demand in order to optimally prepare the helpers for their tasks. “We also provide proof of volunteering and insurance coverage for all volunteers,” explains Andrea Kahofer, head of volunteer services at Volkshilfe. For those interested, further information is available directly from Volkshilfe Lower Austria.
