Young woman fell into the Danube in Korneuburg – search is on!
A young woman fell into the Danube near Korneuburg on Saturday, which led to an extensive deployment of fire and rescue services. Passers-by heard the woman's cries for help and immediately alerted the emergency services. The emergency call came in around 5:45 p.m. and a short time later numerous rescue units were on site to search for the missing person.
The woman may have been bathing with friends near the ferry in Korneuburg or Klosterneuburg. Fire department spokesman Franz Resperger reported that there must have been an incident because the woman has not been seen since then. Ten fire boats were mobilized to carry out the search, but it has since ended. The fire department plans to search the water again at sunrise with several emergency boats.
Emergency forces at a glance
Not only the fire brigade associations from Kritzendorf, Klosterneuburg, Lang Enzersdorf, Höflein an der Donau and Korneuburg were involved in the rescue operation, but also a rescue helicopter (Christophorus 9), a police helicopter and divers from the Vienna professional fire brigade as well as the Tulln water rescue service. Despite intensive efforts, the young woman remains missing for the time being.
In light of these tragic events, it is important to raise awareness of the dangers of swimming in water. The DLRG recorded an increase of 411 fatal accidents in waterways in Germany in 2023, representing an increase of 31 deaths compared to the previous year. This represents the third increase in the number of drownings in a row. For the first time since 2019, there have been more than 400 victims, which underlines the urgency of education and prevention measures.
DLRG President Ute Vogt expressed the hope that people would be sensitized by the terrible news, especially with a view to the upcoming warm season. The DLRG plans to specifically inform parents of small children about the particular dangers when bathing.
The events in Korneuburg once again illustrate how important it is to be careful when spending time near the water and to recognize potential dangers early on. The search for the missing woman continues as the community looks forward to a positive outcome and increased awareness of waterfront safety.
