News from Commissioner Rex: Six exciting episodes with emotional cases!
The shooting of new episodes of the popular ORF/SAT.1 cult crime series "Commissioner Rex" are in full swing. A total of six episodes in feature length are currently being produced in Vienna. Maximilian Brückner takes on the leading role of Commissioner Max Steiner, who informs crime together with his loyal Shepherd Rex. Ferdinand Seebacher plays inspector Felix Burger, while Alfred Dorfer as a pathologist Dr. Tom Wippler acts. Doris Golpashin gives the boss Major Evelyn Leitner and thus brings a fresh wind to the team. The new episodes, which are filmed from April 2025, deal with a failed bomb attack and a mysterious death in a fiaker.
Max Steiner's daughter Anna, represented by Sophie Borchhardt, returns from South America and brings new emotional challenges for her father. Directed by Andreas Kopriva, who runs the first rotary block, and Esther Rauch, who takes over the second dripper in September. The screenplays come from the authors Kawentel & Lombeck and Silvia Wohlmuth.
Vienna in focus
director Andreas Kopriva has set himself the goal of presenting Vienna as one of the main characters in the series. He wants to serve various genres and offer the audience a multifaceted picture of the city. This artistic decision became clear when you visit Brückner, Seebacher, Golpashin and Kopriva on the Otto Wagner area in Vienna. ORF general director Roland Weißmann emphasized the enormous importance of cooperation between public law and private broadcasters in order to promote such projects.
The production of "Commissioner Rex" is carried out by MR film in co-production with Sat.1 and ORF, and is supported by FISA+, TV Fonds Austria, Filmfonds Vienna and the state of Lower Austria. Producer Oliver Auspitz emphasized the return of Rex and the positive message of the series, which is contemporary in times of crime and uncertainty.
context of crime in Austria
The fascinating cases of "Commissioner Rex" come at a time when the police crime statistics (PKS) play an important role in assessing crime development in Austria. Since 2001, the reports displayed have been registered electronically, which is an essential basis for the planning of strategic criminal police measures. This data not only helps fight crime, but also offer insights into social developments.
The PKS only contains the crimes that were reported to the police and were transmitted to courts. Factors such as the display behavior of the population, police control intensity and legal changes can influence the numbers. The last update status of the PKS data was published on April 22, 2025, which underlines the relevance of current topics in "Commissioner Rex".
"Commissioner Rex" not only returns on television, but also remains a key factor in discourse on crime and society in Austria.
