New fire engine for Wernberg: 32 year old replaced!
On August 27, 2025, a new multi-purpose vehicle was handed over to the Wernberg Volunteer Fire Department. This modern vehicle replaces a 32-year-old small vehicle that has now been finally taken out of service. The reception of the new vehicle took place under the leadership of Commander Wilfried Waldhauser and his deputy Robert Kollitsch, supported by numerous fire brigade colleagues.
The total costs for the new emergency vehicle amount to around 200,000 euros. The largest part of this sum is borne by the municipality of Wernberg, while the state fire brigade association has provided funding of 66,500 euros. In addition, the fire department funded some of the equipment and devices through the camaraderie fund, supported by the community. The construction of the vehicle was carried out by the Nusser company from Feldkirchen, whereby the vehicle was individually tailored to the needs of the comradeship.
Blessing and public presentation
The new multi-purpose vehicle was also ceremoniously blessed by the parish of Bruno Arava. Community representatives and a delegation from the Föderlach volunteer fire department also took part in this blessing ceremony. A public blessing of the vehicle has already been announced for the fire brigade festival in July 2026.
Overall, replacing the old vehicle with a modern model is an important step for the Wernberg Volunteer Fire Department in order to meet the increased requirements in fire and disaster protection. In view of the inflationary trends, such financial support for the fire departments is of essential importance.
Support for fire departments
We also find similar support for volunteer fire departments in Lower Austria, where the state governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner and LH deputy Stephan Pernkopf announced an increase in funding for the purchase of new fire engines on January 10, 2024. The funding will increase by 25% from January 1, 2024 in order to relieve the burden on municipalities and fire departments, which are under pressure due to inflation and the wave of price increases.
- Die Förderung für HLF3-Feuerwehrautos steigt von 80.000 Euro auf 100.000 Euro.
- Mannschaftstransportfahrzeuge werden von 7.000 Euro auf 8.750 Euro gefördert.
- Insgesamt werden jährlich rund 100 Feuerwehrfahrzeuge in Niederösterreich angeschafft.
These measures are part of a long-term strategy to support the fire departments, which also purchased over 450 emergency power generators and were supported in the construction of fire stations. Over 100,000 firefighters are active in Lower Austria.
Similar funding mechanisms can also be found in Bavaria, where state grants are made available to municipalities to purchase vehicles and equipment in accordance with the Bavarian Fire Brigade Act. From January 1, 2025, the general renovation of fire stations will be funded in order to bring them up to the structural standards of a new building. These state funds are financed from Bavaria's share of the nationwide fire protection tax.
The need for this support is reflected not only in the purchase of new vehicles, but also in the adaptation of existing infrastructure, which must meet modern fire protection requirements.
