New specialist for international competition matters appointed!
On December 17, 2024, Dr. Lukas Cavada appointed expert for international affairs at the Federal Competition Authority (BWB). In this key position he will be the General Director Dr. Support Natalie Harsdorf in all matters of international cooperation and represent the BWB in international forums. Dr. Cavada's expertise is crucial as international cooperation in combating anti-competitive practices has become increasingly important in recent years. This is particularly important in the context of global digital platforms and ecosystems that do not recognize national borders. His previous position included extensive experience, including several months at the OECD and a significant career at a commercial law firm.
International cooperation in focus
As the BWB announced, networking and the exchange of knowledge between competition authorities is an essential tool for combating antitrust violations and eliminating market abuses. Dr. Cavada will be responsible for expanding these international relationships to work more efficiently, particularly in cross-border investigations. Governments and competition authorities rely on close cooperation, especially when it comes to cross-border offenses or when it comes to sharing best practices. The BWB relies on bilateral agreements and networks, especially with organizations such as the OECD and the International Competition Network (ICN).
Dr. Cavada's commitment to international cooperation reflects the need for small jurisdictions like Austria to become more connected to meet global challenges in competition law. The General Director Dr. Natalie Harsdorf emphasizes the importance of this cooperation: "Cross-border cooperation in competition law enforcement is particularly important for a smaller jurisdiction. Cartels and abuses of market power do not stop at the border." Dr. Cavada will play a key role in expanding these significant international collaborations and strengthening BWB's position on the global stage. Further information was provided by the BWB, which promotes exchange and cooperation on international affairs.
