Mikaela Shiffrin is ready for the 101st World Cup victory in Åre!
Åre, Schweden - Mikaela Shiffrin, the undisputed queen of the alpine skiing, wrote history in Sestriere: With her slalom victory there she sensationally celebrated her 100th World Cup victory. The American, who is celebrating her 30th birthday next week, triumphed in front of Zrinka Ljutic, who took second place and thus took the lead in the Slalom World Cup. For Shiffrin, the way to the anniversary success was not easy - just a day earlier, she missed the second run at the giant slalom, which was a painful premiere for over ten years when she had to end a race early, like 20 minutes reported.
The excitement in advance was great and Shiffrin delivered an impressive performance. In the first slalom round in Åre, she started with a best time of 51.27 seconds and was therefore well ahead of the German Lena Dürr (+0.43 seconds) and the Swede Sara Hector (+0.48 seconds). Katharina Liensberger, on the other hand, was only four hundredths of the podium, which made her fans excited, such as Ö24 reported. In the overall ranking, the idea of the title is still within reach, but the competition does not sleep.
drama and emotions on the slopes
In this race there were also severe setbacks for other athletes: the newly baked world champion Camille Rast, who started the race with a lot of vigor, plunged shortly before the finish and thus missed valuable points in the fight for the small crystal ball. A hard blow for the Swiss team that had hoped for their performance. Wendy Holdener, who won the last slalom in Sestriere in 2022, only came to ninth place this time, while Aline Danioth secured the first points after a long injury break.
Shiffrin remains a force to be expected, while the speed specialists are preparing for their upcoming challenges in Kvitfjell. Your success in Sestriere will certainly make more waves and only increase the expectations of you!
