Knife attack in Favoriten: Police intervene, perpetrator arrested!
A knife attack occurred in Vienna-Favoriten today, which resulted in numerous police operations. A 20-year-old Syrian man was temporarily arrested after an incident in a park. Police observed the suspect making several cutting and stabbing movements with a butterfly knife during an argument with another man. Fortunately, the victim was not injured in the altercation and the murder weapon was recovered. Investigations are now being carried out by the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, South Branch. The suspect denies the allegations.
The argument that led to the attack began the day before with insults between the suspect and his victim. In order to understand exactly what happened, it must be noted that the argument escalated around 2 p.m. in Wielandpark this afternoon. Two men from Syria got into a disagreement that ended in a stabbing. A 27-year-old man was injured in the lower back and a 31-year-old helper suffered a wound to his left forearm. Fortunately, both injured people were taken to hospital without life-threatening injuries. The perpetrator fled after the attack and the police have so far been unsuccessful in finding him. This act took place in a weapons ban zone, which makes the situation even more explosive.
Increasing knife attacks in Austria
The incident in Vienna-Favoriten should not be viewed in isolation. The statistics show a worrying trend: the number of reported violent crimes involving stabbing weapons has risen steadily in Austria over the past few years. While 1,524 crimes were reported in 2013, this number rose to 2,393 in 2022. Record numbers were recorded in 2016 with 2,530 attacks. What is particularly striking is that despite a decline in violent crimes involving firearms since 2017, reports of crimes involving cutting weapons remain constant. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner is therefore planning a general ban on weapons in public spaces in order to strengthen preventive measures. Experts from the Interior Ministry are working on a proposed law that could ban the carrying of certain knives.
The increase in knife attacks and the current incident illustrate how important it is to take effective measures to ensure public safety in Vienna and beyond. This is the only way to curb the increase in violent crimes involving knives in the future.
