McLaren debacle in Vegas: Norris last, Russell lightning fast!

On November 22, 2025, the last training session before the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Las Vegas ended anything but successfully for Lando Norris. The championship leader from McLaren ended the session in last place. Norris had tried dry tires on the wet track, which made him uncompetitive. His teammate Oscar Piastri also had difficulties as a problem with the vehicle's electronics prevented further fast laps. In this negative backdrop, George Russell maintained the top time in training in the Mercedes and took the lead.

Max Verstappen in the Red Bull followed in second place, while Williams' Alex Albon put in a surprisingly strong performance in third place. Qualifying for the upcoming race is scheduled for 5:00 a.m. CET after drivers are put to the test in the final test drive.

Technical challenges during training

Thursday's training also had its challenges. In another training session the day before, Norris set the fastest time with 1:33.602 minutes on soft tires, followed by Andrea Kimi Antonelli in the Mercedes, who was just 0.029 seconds behind. Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari rounded out the top three. However, there were two red phases in this session, which interrupted driving for a total of around 20 minutes. The first red phase was triggered due to a loose drain cover, reminiscent of the incidents at the 2023 Formula 1 premiere in which Carlos Sainz's Ferrari was damaged.

The interruptions show the importance of safety in motorsport. Formula 1 has made significant progress over the past few decades. From the dangerous beginning with no essential safety measures to innovative protective systems such as the halo guard, safety has steadily improved. Despite these advances, complete safety in motorsports remains an elusive goal, as history shows. New protective measures and technologies are constantly being developed to minimize the risk to drivers.

The coming days promise an exciting continuation of the race weekend. The third free practice session and qualifying are scheduled for Saturday before the main race takes place on Sunday.
