Earthquakes shake Carinthia: concerns and noticeable fears in the region!

In the early morning hours of January 10, 2025, two earthquakes occurred near Ampezzo, Italy, which were also felt in Carinthia. According to the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the first quake reached a magnitude of 3.8 at 2:42 a.m., followed by a second quake at 3:45 a.m. with a magnitude of 2.9. These tremors led to numerous calls from concerned residents, but no property damage or injuries have been reported so far, according to the Gailtal Journal.

Volcanoes under observation

Particularly alarming are recent earthquakes in the Phlegraean Fields region, known as home to the largest supervolcano in Europe, which have increased in frequency over the past few months. On May 20, 2024, residents of Pozzuoli suffered a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, causing fear in densely populated areas and causing minor damage to some buildings. This quake was just one of many recorded in this volcanically active zone, joining a series of tremors that have rocked the area since 2023. For example, according to the INGV, a total of 1,252 earthquakes occurred in April 2024, with more than 80% having a magnitude of less than 1.0, which was clearly felt by local residents, as the weather reported.

INGV experts emphasize that despite the ongoing seismic activity, there are no signs of a threat of a super-eruption. The volcano's status has been at yellow alert since 2012. Nevertheless, pressure remains on monitoring seismicity. Geologists warn: “As long as ground uplift continues, further seismicity is to be expected,” making the situation in the Phlegraean Fields still critical while the situation in Carinthia is being reviewed.

Ongoing monitoring by the INGV is intended to ensure that possible changes are immediately recorded and communicated to the population. However, geologists are sure that no immediate dramatic events are to be expected due to the evolutionary processes in the area of the supervolcano. However, public concern remains, especially given recent seismic activity, which cannot be ignored.
