Italy under pressure: Asylum applications achieve record level!
Italy faces a dramatic increase in asylum applications. In 2024, the country has found the highest number in the past ten years with almost 159,000 applications. This corresponds to 16 percent of all asylum applications in the European Union, which positions Italy as the third highest value behind Germany and Spain. The trends show a worrying development because the numbers have increased continuously since 2021. According to OE24, the recognition rate of applications in Italy is classified as very low.
The rejection rate of asylum applications in Italy is particularly striking. Two thirds of the approximately 78,000 first-instance applications were rejected, while the EU average is 48.6 percent. This significant discrepancy suggests that Italy less often grants refugee status than other European countries. From 2012 to 2024, the average recognition rate in Italy was only 10 percent, while the EU average is 23 percent.rejection rates according to countries of origin
The main origins of asylum seekers in Italy are Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and Bangladesh. Where the rejection rates of shocking 80 to 90 percent reach, applications from other EU countries differ, which are often submitted by Syrian (92 percent recognition rate), Venezolan (89 percent) or Afghan applicants (81 percent). In 2024, 46 percent of Afghans as well as 20 percent of the Cameroonians and 18 percent of people from Côte d’Ivoire received refugee status. The focus on the national differences shows that the status of refugees in Italy is difficult to reach.
The figures from 2023 continue to support this development: 88 percent of the first applications were rejected of 135,659 asylum applications. Only 12 percent were decided positively. Refugees from Kenya and Malaysia were among the most successful applicants, while 627 asylum applications were submitted by Italian citizens in other countries.
demographic differences and gender distribution
Another striking point is gender distribution among asylum seekers. Of the 78,000 tested applications, 68,000 came from men and 10,000 of women. While 60 percent of women received a positive decision, the success rate for men was extremely low: only 4.5 percent received refugee status. A total of 29 percent of women and only 4.5 percent of men are said to have been recognized.
In addition to the current situation, around 6,553,671 immigrants live in Italy, which is about 11.1 percent of the total population. This number comprises people living in the country who were born abroad, including recognized refugees, but no asylum seekers. The data comes from censuses and projections of the UN population department, which are raised every five years, as Laender data
