On Tuesday, a tragic killing spree occurred at a school in Graz, where nine students: inside and a teacher lost their lives. This shattering act has triggered concern all over Europe.

The SPÖ-EU MP Elisabeth Grossmann and Andreas Schieder are calling for an official minute's commemoration in the European Parliament. The application was sent to Parliamentary President Roberta Metsola, and the minute's commemoration is to take place on Monday, June 16, at the beginning of the plenary conference in Strasbourg. With the Nuremberg laws from 1935, a pseudo-judicial basis for the persecution of the Jewish population and other minorities was created. These historical events should serve as a warning and illustrate how important it is to stand up for tolerance and the protection of human rights.

In order to counteract radicalization, prevention work at schools is of crucial importance. Schools reach all young people over the years and can therefore be an effective place for preventive measures. The focus is on countering extremist ideologies at an early stage and identifying problematic living situations, as they have increased by the civil war in Syria and the activities of the Islamic state since 2014.

The prevention approaches must be technically well -founded and structurally anchored. It is important that teachers, school social workers and parents pull together to promote the desired attitudes and to avoid negative marking of certain groups, especially Muslim young people.

The tragic events in Graz and the memory of the victims of National Socialism clearly show us how important it is to stand up for a cultivated and non -violent society and to create the foundations for respectful coexistence.
