electoral system in Vienna

The electoral system in Vienna is of essential importance for the political participation of citizens. The Vienna elections refer to the municipal council and district representative elections that take place at the same time. Vienna acts both as a federal capital and as its own federal state, which means that the organs of the city of Vienna perform both legislative and administrative functions at the state level. The municipal council consists of 100 members who are elected every five years, while each of the 23 districts in Vienna has their own district council, which is elected by the citizens.

All Austrian citizens and EU citizens with the main residence in Vienna are entitled to vote, which are at least 16 years old on election day. However, only Austrian citizens are allowed to participate in the municipal elections, since the local council also acts as a state parliament. In the district representation elections, non-Austrian EU citizens who are entered in the voters can also choose and run. There are no voting obligations, and voting is made either via election cards or by postal voting. If necessary, a “flying election commission” can be requested that supports the voters on site.

With the management of MA 62 at the top, Georg Hufgard-Leitner will play a central role in the organization and implementation of these democratic processes. His experience and expertise could prove to be decisive in order to continue to make the elections in Vienna transparent and participatory. The comprehensive tasks that are imminent in his new position will be of great importance for both the administration and the Viennese citizens.
