Bicycle thefts in Salzburg at record high - what to do now!

The number of bicycle thefts in Austria rose to 19,455 in 2024. This represents an increase of almost 900 cases compared to the previous year, although the numbers are still below the level in front of Corona pandemic. In 2019, over 20,805 bicycle thefts were registered, while in 2014 even 28,274 cases were recorded. The clearance rate is only 8.9 percent, since only a small part of the perpetrators could be arrested by the 1,731 cases last year, such as [Kleine Zeitung.at] (https://www.kleinezeitung.at/service/newsticker/chronik/19606678/zie-der-der-der-der-darbelstaehlstehleste- 2024-19455) reported.

The cities of Salzburg and Klagenfurt are particularly affected, where 70 stolen bicycles per 10,000 inhabitants were registered in Salzburg and 65 cases were registered in Klagenfurt. In contrast, the districts of Güssing, Hermagor and Feldkirchen, in which only a few thefts were reported: Güssing only recorded 2, Hermagor 3 and Feldkirchen 5 thefts. The Dornbirn district stands out with 368 stolen bicycles outside the capitals.

The situation in large cities

In Germany, the numbers are similarly worrying. Bremen, Berlin and Hamburg in particular lead with most bicycle thefts per 100,000 inhabitants. In 2019, Bremen recorded the highest theft rate with 926, followed by Berlin with 788 and Hamburg with 656 thefts. In 2022, Hamburg reported 14,726 and Berlin even 28,801 bicycle thefts, whereby the clarification rate in these large cities is between 1.1 and 3.2 percent, as oeffhalt-dienst.de

These figures show that bicycle theft in urban areas is a widespread problem. According to estimates, 70 percent of the perpetrators live near the crime scene, which also makes it difficult to clarify. Many thieves also take advantage of the fact that 25 percent of the stolen bicycles were unpainted.

prevention measures and insurance

In order to support the decline in bicycle thefts, experts recommend registering the frame number of the bicycle and the use of theft insurance, especially for high-quality models or e-bikes. These insurance companies usually offer more comprehensive protection than the standard household insurance, since they also cover partial theft and vandalism, as gdv.de notes.

In addition, it is important to create safe bicycle parking spaces in frequencyed places. The VCÖ spokesman Christian Gratzer emphasizes that joint measures to improve security should be taken by an online card on which missing parking spaces can be reported. The entries will be collected by May 4th and sent to the responsible communities.
