Risk: Asteroid 2024 YR4 hardly threatening!
Vienna, Österreich - The astronomical excitement around the asteroid "2024 YR4" has been flattened for the time being! According to the new estimates of the European Space Organization (ESA), the probability that this celestial body will hit the earth on December 22, 2032, just 1 to 61,728. This means that the fears of a possible impact were very exaggerated. The NASA estimates the probability even less-only 0.0039 percent, such as SPIEGEL reported.
The Asteroid, which has a diameter of 40 to 90 meters and was only discovered two months ago, the experts started. An impact, according to experts, could cause massive damage: If an explosion in the atmosphere, a pressure wave could arise that had devastating effects, or a crater with over a kilometer diameter could be created. However, these scenarios now appear much less threatening, since the ESA had already found in a first risk assessment at the end of January that the probability of impact on further observations often drops to zero. A development that is now true in the case of "2024 YR4", such as Wien.at
The calming comes at the right time, because the focus on potentially dangerous asteroids is of the greatest importance to minimize future risks. With "2024 YR4" the earth is initially on the safe side, which contains the excited discussions about possible apocalypse scenarios!
