Three piano talents are in the final of the Beethoven competition in Vienna!

Musikvereinsplatz 1, 1010 Wien, Österreich - On May 22, 2025, the jury of the 17th International Beethoven Piano competition Vienna announced the finalists. Derek Hartman from the USA, Martin Nöbauer from Austria and Jonas Stark convinced from Germany. These outstanding pianists appear on May 24, 2025 in the final, which takes place in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Music Association.

As part of the competition, which will be held from May 16 to 24, 2025, the finalists present their interpretations of Ludwig van Beethoven's piano works. The competition, which is organized by the MDW University of Music and Performing Art Vienna, is the oldest international piano competition in Austria and is considered one of the most renowned of its kind worldwide. It was launched in 1961 and has been taking place every four years since then, only devotes himself to the work of Ludwig van Beethovens and has a long tradition.

The way to the final

Overall, the competition recorded more than 300 registrations from 32 countries. After a pre-selection and an online video round, 21 talented pianists were selected who will present their skills in live rounds from May 16, 2025. The jury is made by Univ.-Prof. Jan Jiracek led by Arnim, who has been the artistic direction since 2011

The competition is unique not only in its focus on Beethoven, but also in the quality of the participating artists. In the competition, the pianists have to memorize a repertoire from Beethoven works, which includes sonatas, variations and piano concerts. It is important that a selected piece comes from one of the works marked with asterisks.

The final in the Musikverein

The final takes place on May 24, 2025 at 2:30 p.m. in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Music Association, accompanied by the Viennese symphonists under the direction of Petr Popelka. Tickets for the final are already available and can be purchased both in the map office of the Vienna Music Association and online.

Previous winners of the competition are top -class pianists such as Mitsuko Uchida, Stefan Vladar and Jasminka Stančul. This successful history underlines the importance of competition that has existed for over 60 years and is a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions. Particular attention is paid to promoting young talents aged 18 to 30 years.
