Digital innovation against dementia: App protects against risk!
A new research project called Lethe-AT specializes in the development of a hybrid, personalized app for prevention from dementia. This innovative project is initiated by the FH Joanneum Institute in cooperation with the Medical University of Vienna and pursues the goal of specifically identifying and influencing risk factors for dementia. According to [ots.at] (https://www.ots.at/presseaus-sung/ots_20250603_ots0047/lethe-at-oesterreich- research project-developed-development-to-use-praischern-von-dementenz), the app could be prevented from being reduced to changeable risk factors can be.
As part of the project, a test study is carried out with risk patients, which is an essential part of research. The study, which is scheduled to start in autumn 2025 and has a term of 18 months, is carried out with 120 participants aged 55 to 75, the digital know-how. These subjects are looked after in university clinics in Vienna, Graz and Innsbruck, and the recruitment process is organized by the Graz Digital Health Startup Probando.
interventions for risk reduction
The app will use AI algorithms to record and optimize the movement and nutritional behavior of the users. In addition, the participants receive a personalized timetable for motivation for healthier behavior. In addition to digital support, personal exchange with medical specialist staff should also be promoted in order to strengthen positive interventions. In parallel to the app development, a concept for the establishment of Brain Health Services (BHS) in Austria is developed, which aims to record and support people without symptoms, but with increased risk.
The German Alzheimer's Society (DalzG) has also developed measures for prevention. In cooperation with the Federal Institute for Public Health, materials for information events were created that are intended to support multipliers in clarifying risk factors. The event entitled "Remain mentally fit - with 10 measures prevent dementia" offers knowledge about the functioning of the brain and possible preventive measures that are related to the education over dementia. These materials can be requested free of charge. More information is available on the DalzG website Deutsche--alzheimer.de.
The role of risk factors
The identification and management of risk factors are crucial for prevention of dementia. A study emphasizes that early behavioral changes, such as social withdrawal and sensory restrictions, can occur 20 years before a dementia diagnosis. So preventive approaches are important to reduce the risk. It is therefore essential to understand the influence of factors such as overweight and hearing loss on the risk of dementia. Each of these factors can lead to an increase in the risk of disease if it is not addressed in time. Details can be found on sciencemediacenter.de.
The Lethe-AT project and the associated initiatives show how important it is to integrate both digital and personal strategies in order to effectively counter the challenges of dementia prevention. The promotion of healthy ways of life and the early identification of risk factors play a central role in these efforts.
