In the popular competition “9 Places – 9 Treasures”, which was initiated by ORF, theAmber Castlefrom the Oberwart district represented as one of three nominations for the title of state winner. This castle, which sits at a height of 640 meters, is not only the highest castle in Burgenland, but also has an eventful history that dates back to the 12th century. Over the centuries, the castle has been the scene of battles and sieges, and various owners such as Hungarian kings and Austrian dukes have shaped its fate.
The current owner,Erasmus Almasy, has been running the castle as a hotel and family business for over 100 years. Together with his family, he offers tours of the historic premises, which range from medieval architecture to a wonderful garden.
