Citizens in Burgenland are calling for Good Friday to be reintroduced as a public holiday for everyone
The Protestant community in Burgenland recently sent a clear signal by collecting over 4,000 signatures for the reintroduction of Good Friday as a holiday for everyone. This campaign was led by Superintendent Robert Jonischkeit, who personally handed over the list of signatures to State Parliament President Robert Hergovich.
Hergovich welcomed this initiative and emphasized the importance that the Protestant community should not be restricted in its religious practice. He supports the idea of establishing Good Friday as a public holiday for everyone and sees the federal legislature as having a responsibility to do justice to this central concern of Protestant Christians.
Superintendent Jonischkeit emphasized the importance of Good Friday as an inseparable part of Easter. He explained that Jesus' death on the cross forms the basis for the redemption of people and thus makes the resurrection possible. In addition to the signatures, he also presented an “Open Letter on the Situation of Good Friday,” which is aimed at all political and social decision-makers.
The handover of the signatures took place against the background of the anniversaries “100 years of the state patron Saint Martin” and “100 years of superintendence in Burgenland”. State Parliament President Hergovich emphasized the important role of the churches in social cohesion in the country and emphasized the Christian tradition and identity of Burgenland as well as the lived togetherness, which has a special significance here.
