youth crime in focus
The incident at the Volksfest is also highlighting the latest crime statistics in Austria, which was published by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP). In 2024 there was an alarming increase in youth crime, whereby the number of suspects aged 10 to 14 years has increased to 12,049 ads - a doubling in recent years. It is particularly worrying that 48% of these suspects are not of Austrian origin. The statistics also indicate a significant increase in crimes with the participation of Syrian citizens.
The crime statistics also show that the number of burglaries goes back into living spaces, while burglary theft in cars and machines have increased by 25%. In addition, violence among young people is an increasing problem that is identified as an urgent topic by prominent politicians, such as the Vienna FPÖ boss Dominik Nepp. Claims for a reduction in punishment and stricter measures against parents whose school -age children do not go to school are loud. Developments at the Volksfest and the current statistical data illustrate the need for a comprehensive strategy to combat youth crime in Austria.
