Brand in Nussdorf-Debant: Fire brigade fights against the flames!

Nußdorf-Debant, Österreich - On June 30, 2025, Minister of Agriculture Norbert Tettschnig and State Councilor Astrid Mair visited the fire location of a major fire in Nussdorf-Debant. Around 120 firefighters continue to use to extinguish embers and fire nests. Although the fire is now under control, the destruction on site is considerable. Minister Totschnig informed that experts from Bolzano and Munich gave the all -clear; The drinking water is not endangered. Further measurements, including groundwater measurements, are already being planned.

The situation was already dramatic when a fire with heavy smoke development was reported to the waste management center on Saturday, June 28th, at 1:25 p.m. The first fire departments and blue light organizations moved out as quickly as possible. At 2:55 p.m. the AT-Alert was sent out for the surrounding communities, and the population was asked to close windows and doors and to minimize the outdoor stay. Explosions on the site tightened the risk situation for the emergency services, which is why direct fire fighting was temporarily stopped.

coordination and emergency services on site

A deployment discussion took place in the district administration of Lienz, in which fire brigade commanders also took part. A total of over 500 emergency services have been involved in the extinguishing work since Saturday, including support trains from Upper Carinthia. On Sunday there were hundreds of firefighters on site, and the fire guard was supported with drones at night to prevent it from being flared up. Unfortunately, five firefighters were injured indefinitely in the missions, and nine needed medical care.

on Monday morning, June 29, the emergency services managed to control the fire, with around 40 firefighters still working. The focus was now on the dug of the fire site to minimize the risk of rebuilding. Fortunately, the initial results of the air measurements did not show any limit value, which is a relief for the population.

protection of the population

The protection of the population was a top priority throughout the effort. Schools and kindergartens in several communities were closed on June 30th to ensure the safety of the children. A special recommendation was aimed at more vulnerable groups to minimize their stay outdoors. The drinking water supply remained secured for the communities affected by the fire disaster, and on Tuesday, July 1, the regular school and kindergarten operation will be resumed.

In view of the global fire statistics, as contained in the report № 29 of the CFS CTIF, it is evident that such incidents are not isolated. The report illustrates the seriousness of forest and major fires worldwide and the need to be even better prepared through preventive measures and coordinated missions. Expert groups from different countries recommend collecting further data about fires and their causes in order to improve international fire brigade statistics.

The cooperation of all the actors involved, in particular the firefighters and men and the supporting authorities, has proven to be extremely valuable in this critical situation. In addition to the emergency services, thanks also go to the communities and organizations who have contributed to successful coordination.

Further developments and results are obtained from the analytical taskforces from Munich and Bozen, while the fire site continues to be observed.
