A tragic event shakes Graz: On Tuesday morning, shortly before 10 a.m., there was a killing spree at a school in the Lend district, in which current reports of ten dead and a double -digit number of seriously injured speak. The killing run is reminiscent of a similar tragedy that Graz experienced a few years ago. On June 20, 2015, an amocran occurred, in which the perpetrator, a 26-year-old man named Alen R., raced through the city center with an SUV. He deliberately ran over pedestrians and cyclists and killed a total of three people, including a four -year -old child. He also injured 36 other people, with a 75-year-old man succumbing to his injuries eight months after the crime. Alen R. were given several psychiatric reports, which, however, led to different diagnoses. Finally, he was found to be guilty and sentenced to life in prison. In September 2023 he was found dead in his cell, with suicide being accepted.

The investigation in the case of Alen R. showed that the perpetrator fled to Austria with his family before the Bosnia war. His wife had left him for domestic violence, and the marriage was divorced in 2016. During the killing ride, R. drove with an estimated maximum speed of up to 100 km/h and even moved on a certain point on walking stations and in pedestrian zones. The trial against him started 15 months after the actions, on September 20, 2016.

In view of the repeated violence of educational institutions, the debate about security and prevention is re -lived up. According to an analysis, attacks on schools and other educational institutions are perceived as worrying. The Alen R. case and the current tragedy in Graz make it clear that there are urgent need for action to prevent such incidents in the future.
