Blum builds track connection: traffic center Dornbirn in the upswing!

In a future -oriented step to promote sustainable logistics, Blum is investing in the expansion of his track connection at the Dornbirn location. According to Vol.at construction work has been carried out for relocating a second track at work 7 since the beginning of June 2025. This measure is almost intended to doubt the capacity of the connecting track stick, which will enable Blum to make an important part of its logistics company more efficient.

The project provides to increase the current track length of 210 meters to 410 meters. This enables the handling of up to 16 40-foot lake containers daily and also the loading of truck trailers and alternating structures (WABS). The construction work is carried out in cooperation with Rhomberg Bau GmbH and should be completed by the end of October 2025. In this context, the existing track is removed and the gravel substructure is renewed.

sustainability in focus

A particularly sustainable aspect of the project is the recycling of a large part of the gravel substructure that is to be washed and prepared. Old rails are also reused. During the construction period, container transport is temporarily handled by truck between Dornbirn and the Wolfurt terminal. Biogas -powered shuttles and regional transport service providers are used. Traffic disruptions around the factory area cannot be ruled out during the construction work.

The sticking track stick is one of the most active in Austria and in 2024 handled over 220,000 tons. Blum strives for a significant increase in the proportion, the sand, gravel and building materials transported by train. Corresponding cooperations, especially with Rhomberg Bau GmbH, are to be expanded. In addition, an expansion of the Wolfurt terminal is necessary to exploit the further potential in rail logistics.

Special attention is paid to the demand for a rail expansion and the improvement of the track infrastructure in Germany and Switzerland in order to optimize the transport capacity. Blum's goal is to increase the proportion of goods transported by rail to over 50 percent.

rail logistics in numbers

The relevance of rail logistics manifests itself not only in the local projects, but also in the national trend data. In Austria there are a total of 56 railway traffic companies in freight transport. Private freight transport has increased its market share in the traffic volume of 39.6 % to 40.9 % in 2022, which underlines the growing meaning of rail transport, as the wko reported.

In the same year, freight transport was 23.8 billion net tinge kilometers, which is an increase compared to previous years. However, the market also shows fluctuations, which requires flexible transport solutions. An example of an innovative solution in rail freight transport is the cooperation between Loacker Recycling with the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group, which enables you to transport 200,000 tons of valuable materials in an environmentally friendly manner every year and thus replace more than 8,000 truck trips, such as Railcargo.com describes.

With these developments it becomes clear that the demand for sustainable logistics solutions continues to increase and that rail transport as an environmentally friendly alternative in freight transport plays a central role.
