Archaeologists reveal 31 forgotten wrecks in Lake Constance!

In Lake Constance, archaeologists have come across a remarkable discovery: a total of 31 wrecks that have been forgotten for decades or even centuries. This important project, which is known as "Wracks and Tiefsee", has been running since 2022 and has the goal of systematically researching the mysterious underwater world of the lake. High-resolution bathymetry, sidescan sonar and remote-controlled robots are used to capture and document the mysterious structures on the lake floor. VOL.AT reports that The project is shaped by an intensive scientific analysis that will continue until summer 2027.

The discoveries include two metal shocks, which are very likely to come from the shovel wheel steamers "SD Baden" and "SD Friedrichshafen II". These ships have an important story: "SD Friedrichshafen II" was put into service in 1909, was able to promote 600 passengers and dropped in 1944, while "SD Baden" was deployed from 1871 and was retired in 1930. These history is now breathed into new life with the documentation and evaluation of the remains. Tagesschau emphasizes that are not only of cultural, but also of technical importance.

The extraordinary load sailing ship

A special sensation is the find of an almost completely preserved load sailing ship that is extremely rare in underwater archeology. This ship provides valuable insights into the art of shipping and seafaring on Lake Constance and is a time capsule that keeps manual skills from past generations. [Herder reports that] (https://www.herder.de/wbg-magazine/aktuelles/2025/schifffahrt-am-bodensee-bisher-31-un- Unknown-Wracks-Fisen/) The low growth in this area has a positive impact on the visibility of the Details and thus facilitates research.

The discoveries also include a rubble field from at least 17 wooden barrels, some of which are in good condition. However, the origin of the associated transport ship remains unclear what will lead to new puzzles and future studies. The focus of the project is not to recover the structures found, but to record them documentary and to determine their value as underwater monuments. The aim is to emphasize the importance of the objects found for local history and to understand their influence on shipping in Lake Constance.

future prospects and goals of the project

The financial means for the project are provided by the Ministry of Landes Development and Living Baden-Württemberg. By the end of 2024, more than 250 potential anomalies have already been identified in Lake Constance, of which 186 were examined in more detail. 155 of these anomalies were classified as natural structures or human artifacts. The project not only contributes to the archaeological research on Lake Constance, but also makes an important contribution to maintaining and securing the cultural heritage in the region. VOL.AT emphasizes that The work will be continued by summer 2027 in order to document all aspects and finds comprehensively.
