AMOSLauf in Graz: Found a tragic farewell letter from the perpetrator!

On Tuesday morning, the city of Graz experienced a tragic act of violence. A 21-year-old Austrian from Graz environment, who used to be a student at the high school in Dreierschützengasse, chose the school as a crime scene. According to current investigations, he acted alone and left a farewell letter that was found during a house search. The young man who no longer attended school after the demolition regularly committed suicide on a school toilet after shoting a legally obsessed shotgun and a bell.

no previous police abnormalities or reservations of the perpetrator were found. The 21-year-old was registered with the AMS and had attended a course. At school, which includes around 400 pupils and 43 teachers, there is an advisory team with a school psychologist, a student advice and teachers. Youth coaching is also offered once a week.

bullying as a possible cause

The motif behind this violent act is intensively discussed among the experts. It is speculated that the perpetrator could have been a bullying victim. Bullying is described as aggressive behavior with intention to damage by one or more students compared to others. It includes the goal of inflicting someone else and often happens over a longer period of time, with a power weight between the perpetrator and the victim. This unequal distribution of power means that affected students feel helpless and possibly even develop suicidal thoughts, which is one of the most common causes of death up to 50 years in Austria, especially among young people between 15 and 29 years.

A comprehensive violence protection strategy in schools that also includes preventive measures against bullying is essential. Prevention of violence not only aims to address the fears and fantasies of children and adolescents, but also to create a safe school environment in which tolerance and appreciation are in the foreground.

after -effects and closure of the school

After the act of violence, the school remains temporarily closed. This measure not only serves to protect the school community, but also to deal with the traumatic events. Educational psychologists indicate that experiences of violence at school can have long -term effects on mental health and life satisfaction of those affected. A positive environment can prevent aggressive behavior and discrimination and should therefore have absolute priority.

In view of these tragic events, the importance of a clear emergency plan for schools becomes clear. This should include guidelines for acute situations in order to ensure help for affected students and teachers as quickly as possible, to maintain regular school operations and to counteract suicidality. The school community now faces the challenge of returning to a safe and supportive learning environment.
