$50 million for hot tea burning: Starbucks under pressure!
A Los Angeles court has ruled that Starbucks must pay $50 million to a customer who suffered severe burns. The incident occurred in 2020 at a drive-thru in California when a mug of hot tea spilled into the man's lap, causing serious injuries, including third-degree burns to his penis and inner thighs. According to the plaintiff's attorneys, the cup tipped over because the waitress did not properly place it in the holder, leading to the horrific incident that required multiple skin grafts and left the man with ongoing pain and psychological harm, such as Cosmo reported.
Starbucks showed understanding for the plaintiff's situation. However, the company plans to appeal the verdict as the damages are considered excessive. A spokeswoman for the company told AFP that the high compensation amount was not justified in her opinion. This case brings back memories of a similar incident in 1994, when McDonald's in New Mexico had to pay more than $2.8 million in compensation for burning a customer with hot coffee.
