The future of the media in danger: Vice Germany is being discontinued!
In a dramatic turn in the media landscape, there are two prominent players on the brink: the online Magazine Day one must be provided by 1,000 new members or 7,000 euros by the end of March Win to escape an impending closure. The magazine suffers particularly from the loss of a significant order from the Wiener Zeitung. Dominik Ritter-Wurnig, founder of day one, expressed confidently: "We do not give up. Critical media are needed that research, classify and educate." Day one has been delivering deep analyzes with a small budget since 2022 and has focused on politics and media since 2024. In order to strengthen the support of the readership, day one has now introduced an innovative solution: the abolition of the paywall and a "pay-as-you-wish" model to give its readers free access to high quality journalism.
closure of Vice Germany
In parallel to these challenges, the sad news of Vice Germany will close its gates at the end of March. Editor -in -chief Tim Geyer announced the attitude of the German -language content and confirmed that between 40 and 50 employees are affected by the closure. Vice, once known as a "hipster bible", experienced great success with provocative content and subculture issues, but could not hold its critical mass after financial difficulties that were associated with the bankruptcy of the parent company in 2023. Although Geyer was still optimistic in July 2023 and confirmed the continued existence of the Berlin office, the company must now see reality: "The party is not over yet," has now become an after hour.
The DJU union in Verdi accompanies the closure process and regrets the decision because journalism loses an important voice and an important format with the end of Vice. Both cases illustrate the fragile conditions under which modern media have to operate in a challenging economic environment.
