Mobile phone ban at schools: progress or step back for young people?
Mobile phone ban at schools: progress or step back for young people?
Augsburg, Deutschland - In Tyrol, the discussion about a general ban on cell phone at schools has taken on. While the student representative is clearly against flat -rate restrictions and instead relies on information and responsible use of digital media, the State Parent Representation (LEVT) expresses concerns about the negative effects of excessive cell phone use. As the Tiroler ORF reported, the LEVT advocates for social and educational training in the classroom in order to enable children to handle safe use. A ban on social media is considered sensible, but blocking the appropriate apps is a challenge. It is also suggested that schools should decide independently on mobile phone usage rules.
The AHS teacher union in Tyrol criticized the idea of a nationwide ban as uncoordinated and warns of the challenge of enforcing such a ban without sufficient aids for teachers. Another aspect of the debate was taught by the Augsburger Allgemeine, which should be called to impart a met Concentrate handling of digital media and instead of issuing the rules for students binding regulations for tech companies. The Catholic Family Association supports a general ban in elementary schools, while flexible regulations are desired in higher schools to meet the different circumstances.
These divergent opinions raise questions whether strict bans are actually expedient or whether a differentiated approach to digital use in the field of education is necessary. The debate for the right way in media education has thus achieved a new highlight and shows the different views of students, parents and teachers to use cell phones in class.
