Wrong Pope death message causes excitement in Salzburg!

In the night of Thursday, a fake news about the death of Pope Francis caused considerable confusion. A user on the social platform X incorrectly made up as an archbishop Franz Lackner and spread the dramatic message: "Sad news from Rome. Our beloved Pope Francis died a few minutes ago", as from kathpress.at . The Archdiocese of Salzburg immediately responded to the false report and warned the public about the fraudulent account, which was "as wrong and tasteless as its content".

These incidents are not new: there have been similar cases before that false identities of well -known church representatives were used to spread alleged death messages. In the case of the Archbishop Lackner there was also another contribution, which claimed that the official news of the Holy Stuhl will soon be published, such as derStandard.at . Despite the turmoil, the fraudulent account has now been deleted, which again indicates the dangers of social media. The Salzburg Archdiocese made it clear that the only authentic profiles of Archbishop Lackner can be found on platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.
