Pure Waldviertel: Celebrate regional enjoyment at Vienna’s Rathausplatz!
The opening of “waldviertelpur”, a celebration of regional delights that is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, took place on Wednesday at Vienna’s Rathausplatz. State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) tapped the first beer with Zwettler beer. The event extends until Friday and will be accompanied by high-ranking political representatives, including Vienna Vice Mayor Kathrin Gaál (SPÖ), Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) and Tourism State Secretary Elisabeth Zehetner (ÖVP) reported oe24.
“Waldviertelpur” aims to promote regional enjoyment and cultural diversity. Visitors can look forward to a variety of activities including crafts, music and traditional performances. Craftsmen demonstrate their skills in carving, weaving and sewing, while musical entertainment ranges from brass music, folk songs to rock bands. A special highlight of the event is a traditional costume fashion show by Elfi Maisetschläger.
Culinary highlights from the Waldviertel
The event also offers a platform for culinary specialties from the region. The Waldviertel classics include dumplings, carp and poppy seed noodles. The selection of drinks includes beer from Zwettl and Schrems as well as select wines from the Kamptal. These regional foods are part of Austria's culinary heritage, maintained by local farmers and food producers writes waldviertel.at.
The gastronomic offering is used not only to strengthen tourism, but also to promote regional identity in the Waldviertel. Knowledge about the cultivation and processing of regional products has been passed on in Austria for generations. To protect this culinary heritage, initiatives such as the GIAHS program are recognized by the FAO, which promotes traditional farming systems reports UNESCO.at.
The “Genussregion Österreich” initiative aims to make agricultural specialties known through targeted signage and to increase appreciation for local products. In the Waldviertel in particular, there are already awards for special products such as the Waldviertler gray poppy, Waldviertler carp and Waldviertler Kriecherl. Such measures are part of efforts to preserve the diversity of biological resources and promote sustainable development.
All Viennese are warmly invited to attend the event and enjoy the culinary and cultural highlights of the Waldviertel.
