Tyrolean Folk Theater 2026: Mitterer and Pixner bring culture!
The preparations for the Tyrolean Folk Plays 2026 are in full swing. A reading lasting several hours with “all stars” from North and South Tyrol is planned, which will focus on texts by the renowned writer Joseph Roth. Artistic director Gregor Bloéb emphasizes that community spirit comes from the heart in this project and plays a central role.
The reading will be in collaboration with the United Stage Bolzano realized, although we are currently still looking for the right people to take part in the performance. In addition to the reading, Mitterer's piece will also premiere on July 30, 2026. It deals with the “Bumsern”, a group that blew up infrastructure in the 1950s and 1960s to draw attention to the oppression of the South Tyrolean minority.
Theater and music in focus
The performance of “Feuernacht” will be directed by Thomas Gassner, who is planning a work that addresses the challenges faced by the people of that time. The musical adaptation of the stage work will come from Pixner, while Manu Delago will appear in the live ensemble. In this context, a marathon reading entitled “Escape without End” is also offered, which focuses on Roth and his themes.
Director Rudolf Frey emphasizes the importance of cross-border cooperation between North and South Tyrol and sees this as an important aspect for future artistic collaboration. A budget of 1.7 million euros was planned for the Tyrolean Volksschauspiele 2026, which was already achieved in 2025.
Visitor numbers and goals
In 2025, 16,800 visitors were recorded. The goal is to reach this number again next year and thus further expand the success of the folk theater. In this context, the collaboration between regional artists and institutions represents a valuable contribution to promoting the cultural scene.
