Rescue of rare breeds of domestic animals: The Sturm-Archehof in Heiligenblut

In Heiligenblut, at an impressive 1,300 meters above sea level, Angelina Pucher runs the Sturm-Archehof with her husband Hubert. Since 1998, they have been working tirelessly to preserve rare breeds of domestic animals and to manage them in a way that is close to nature. Her commitment to biodiversity was honored by being named Biodiversity Ambassador for the Farming for Nature project, making her stand out among the five most outstanding agricultural businesses in Austria. The farm is home to exceptional breeds such as Tauern piebald goats, brown mountain sheep, Sulmtaler chickens and blue Viennese rabbits, which hardly receive any attention in today's agriculture. “It's about accompanying a life, an animal that gives us food at the end of its life,” explains Angelina, who advocates treating animals with respect.

Commitment to nature and biodiversity

In addition to breeding rare animal species, nature conservation plays a central role at the Sturm-Archehof. Through targeted measures such as creating piles of branches and stones as well as small ponds, the farm creates valuable habitats for insects and amphibians. Angelina Pucher describes how space is consciously given to nature in certain areas so that natural processes such as floods and avalanches can create new habitats for flora and fauna. By consciously avoiding chemical fertilizers and pesticides and using traditional craft techniques, the environment remains largely untouched and in balance. Their goal is agriculture that recognizes animals as fellow creatures and fits into natural cycles.

The location of the Sturm-Archehof is picturesque and historically influenced. Surrounded by two babbling streams, it is known as a time-honored farm in the Winkl district, very close to the foot of the majestic Großglockner. This natural setting means not only a spectacular sight, but also a rich tradition of agriculture that preserves the culture and knowledge of the region at that time. Particular attention is paid to the projects led by Angelina Pucher since 2018 to promote biodiversity and pass on ancient knowledge to the next generation. Your commitment should also inspire other farmers to actively work to preserve biodiversity. The Sturm-Archehof is therefore a shining example of sustainable agriculture and responsible treatment of nature.
