A terrible incident shook the district hospital in Frankenberg on Thursday evening when a devastating fire broke out. Tragic enough, a man lost his life in a patient room, while numerous others came away with minor injuries. At 6:40 p.m. the first emergency calls were received by the police and shortly afterwards the rescue operation was initiated, but all help came too late for the affected man.

A total of 20 people, including 13 patients, five clinic staff and two firefighters, suffered smoke poisoning and had to be cared for. The cause of the fire and the identity of the deceased is currently still unclear, which would present the investigators with great challenges. As a standard procedure, the police initiated an investigation procedure in order to examine the incident in detail.

On Friday morning, the fire investigators from the Korbach criminal police and experts from the Hessian State Criminal Police Office continued their investigations. A forensic doctor of the Gießen Institute was also on site to get to the bottom of the circumstances of the incident. While the investigation at the crime scene has now been completed, the results are still pending. Further studies on the identity of the deceased are planned for the coming week.
