Fraud on the phone: 50-year-olds loses several thousand euros!
The dangers of online banking have come into focus again after an incident in Neu-Ulm. Last Monday, a 50-year-old woman received a call from an alleged bank employee who confronted her with a threatening message. According to his statements, her online banking access was hacked, and unauthorized debit has already been made from her account. In order to undo these transactions, she urgently needs to enter a TAN (transaction number).
The woman, convinced of speaking to a legitimate bank employee, fell in the stitch and gave the required TAN prize. The fraudsters already had access to their account and were able to make debit in a low four -digit amount. The Neu-Ulm Criminal Police Inspection is now investigating data.
How the frauds operate
This type of fraud, often referred to as phishing, is widespread in criminals. In order to gain the trust of the victims, the bank's correct telephone number in the display device is often simulated. Despite the number displayed in the display, it is often a fake number that is faked by special software. The fraudsters then use false information via allegedly expiring access data or incorrect transfers to manipulate the victims and move the TAN.
In order to avoid such incidents and protect themselves from the criminal machinations, the police provide the following advice:
- Never transmit tan codes or access data for online banking to third parties.
- call back if you have any doubts at your bank's phone number to check the information.
- do not click on links in suspicious messages and do not enter any sensitive data on these pages.
- Always check the sender for emails before opening attachments.
- Ignore messages from unknown senders, be it by email, SMS or app.
- contact your local police station if suspected.
