On November 16, 2025, Rory McIlroy made history again by winning the DP World Tour overall ranking for the seventh time. This makes him the second best player in the history of this tour, only Colin Montgomerie with eight total victories has more success. Despite his overall victory, McIlroy had to admit defeat to Matt Fitzpatrick in the season finale in Dubai, who won the tournament in a play-off.
McIlroy started the final day of play with a shared lead and extended his lead with birdies on the first two holes and the fifth hole. But his advantages disappeared on the back nine. A defining moment was his bogey on the 16th hole, which put him behind Fitzpatrick. However, he made a spectacular eagle on the final hole, leading to a playoff. However, in the playoff on the par-5 18th hole, McIlroy shot his tee shot into the water and was unable to recover, while Fitzpatrick won the title.
