Control calm and greening: The outer Mariahilfer Straße blooms!

The redesign projects in the outer Mariahilfer Straße in Vienna are in full swing and promise a significant upgrading of this important traffic artery. This street extends over 1.9 kilometers, from the belt to the Schloßallee, and is completely renewed in several stages. One of the central measures are the expansion of cycle paths and the integration of new green areas. Ulli Sima, the planning city councilor, was enthusiastic about the progress and emphasized: "We clear and green all over the city." The support already granted by numerous residents and the results of a citizen survey illustrate the desire for more quality of life and well-being in the area, such as press.wien.gv.at reported.

green space and traffic calming

Another focus of the redesign is on the traffic calming in the neighboring streets. For example, several trees were planted in Palmgasse, and the road is converted into a traffic -calmed area. "In the increasingly hot summers of the future, more trees will be decisive in densely populated growns for health and quality of life," explains Angelika Pipal-Leixner from Neos Vienna. In addition to a significant increase in the green areas, the construction work also initiates a decline in through traffic, which not only benefits the quality of life of the residents, but also benefits other urban areas. This was also taken up by wien.gruene.at where it was emphasized that more and more cities are on traffic calming in their centers to make the urban space more livable.

The renewal of the outer Mariahilfer Straße also includes the creation of new residence areas with numerous seating and water features. A total of 600 meters of cycling infrastructure and 18 new trees are planted in the first construction phase to alleviate the summer temperatures and create more shade. With these measures, the street should no longer be perceived as a through -train road, but as a place of encounter and relaxation for all citizens.
