New life for old AOK: Hotel, apartments and day care center planned in Wedding!

in Weddinger, on Ostender Straße, the AOK Nordost has moved into its new neighborhood since 2021. The modern service center and the “Center für Health” offer a variety of specialist practices that are accessible exclusively for AOK insured persons. The move went smoothly, since the AOK was only located on the property of Müllerstrasse 145 a few steps away.

But the old outpatient clinic, a building from the late 1950s, is now empty and is waiting for its future. Historically, it is unique that once accommodated specialists for AOK insured persons. This model was introduced in the Weimar Republic, but according to the 1955 Statutory Act, it was considered socialist and was largely abolished in West Germany. An exception to the Wedding made it possible for the AOK to obtain the outpatient ceremony in 1960, which was now abandoned after 60 years of operation. The property now belongs to a private investor who is planning various uses, but the building is not under monument protection and could be torn down for new construction projects.

A building application was submitted and approved, but the real estate crisis is troubled by the investors. High interest rates and a stagnating demand for offices due to the economic situation and the home office trend lead to an oversupply of office space in wedding. The real estate industry is under pressure, and many new construction projects are hardly affordable.

The uncertainty about the future of the outpatient clinic remains, while the city has to adjust to a change in the real estate sector. The plans for the terrain are still in the balance, and the residents wonder what will become from this historical place.
