New pigeon strike in Hellersdorf: A glimmer of hope for city pigeons!

Hellersdorf, Deutschland - At the Hellersdorf underground station, an innovative, animal protection-friendly pigeon strike has opened its gates, the first of its kind in Marzahn-Hellersdorf. Supported by the Senate Department for Justice and Consumer Protection, this pilot project aims to control the immense city pigeon population, which has accumulated around the Alice Salomon Square. In a converted sea container, up to 700 pigeons find safe nesting places, feed, water and medical control, as Marzahn-Hellersdorf reported live. These birds had previously mainly breeded on roofs and balconies, often in problematic and insecure environments.

The new institution is supervised by volunteers of the “Stadtaubenprojekt Berlin”, who regularly monitor the nesting places. A decisive element of the project is the exchange of freshly laid eggs for dummies in order to reduce the pigeon population humanly and to promote their health in the long term. District Mayor Nadja Zivkovic (CDU) emphasized the need to counteract the typical prejudices on city pigeons and to find a solution -friendly solution. This positive Initiative could help combat the daily faecal of around 10 grams per pigeon, which is around 0.5 tons annually, which would otherwise end up in sidewalks and parking spaces, the project managers explained from Berlin's Week.

functions and goals of the pigeon stroke

The pigeon stroke should not only offer the pigeons more quality of life, but also promote public cleanliness. Esther Uleer, State Secretary for Consumer Protection, sees the project an example of how urban funding and voluntary work can work hand in hand to secure the well -being of the citizens. Despite the positive feedback from residents and traders, the nature conservation association Berlin (NABU expressed skepticism with regard to the actual effectiveness of the pigeon stroke in the population restriction.
