New location of Volkshilfe Vienna: Focus on mental health!

Wien, Österreich - Volkshilfe Vienna has opened a new location for its Garconnierenverbund, which provides barrier -free one -room apartments for twelve people with mental illnesses. The rents for the living spaces are between 250 and 300 euros per month and are funded by the social affair fund Vienna. Tanja Wehsely, the managing director of Volkshilfe Vienna, emphasizes the importance of an open handling of mental illnesses.

Michael Häupl, President of Volkshilfe, supports this statement and warns of the stigmatization of mental illnesses. This problem is reinforced by the results of the fourth Viennese population survey on mental health from 2023, which shows an increasing number of mental stress among the population, especially in people in the lower economic third and in the case of single parents. In order to meet these challenges, the City of Vienna relies on the expansion of its medical and psychosocial offers in the psychiatric and psychosomatic care plan.

focus on youth and prevention

Special attention has been paid to young people under the age of 25 since 2020. In this context, the discussion about the so -called "system sprinklers" is also conducted. Ewald Lochner, coordinator for psychiatry, addiction and drug issues, criticizes the associated stigmatizing expression and demands a social reflection on the psychological problems among under 14 year olds. In Vienna there is a good cooperation between the health sector and other care facilities to meet these challenges.

The support for people with chronic psychological impairments is also supplemented by offers from the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB). This assisted living is aimed at people who are unable to live independently. Depending on the need for support, the residents receive regular visits to supervisors who offer support for problems in everyday life, budget organization and work search.

social integration and independence

The concept of assisted living attaches particular importance to promoting independence and personal responsibility of the residents. The aim is to make the support in such a way that the individual people are optimally prepared for an independent life without being under pressure. Services also include help in coping with crisis situations and the care of social contacts.

The City of Vienna is therefore not only responding to the increasing mental illnesses among the population, but also to the specific challenges that young people look for today. The need for initial limited measures in child and youth welfare is also emphasized. It is expected that a federal law amendment on these topics will take place this year.

Die Volkshilfe Vienna, the city and the various organizations are committed to holistic support for people with mental illnesses and contribute to social horror. Further information on these offers is available at Kleine Zeitung, ORF.://wien.orf.at/stories/3305441/) and and [Asb.
