Kassel in the coworking craze: Why some providers fall by the wayside

Deutsche Bahn draws the line: Your coworking location at Wilhelmshöhe station in Kassel will be closed at the end of the year! The reason? A lack of demand and high losses. Since 2020, the railway has operated at nine large train stations, including Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe, Coworking centers, but now it turns out that the rental offices do not find the hoped-for. According to the railway, the bookings remained far behind expectations, which is mainly due to the changed working models after corona pandemic.

While the railway gives up its offer, the reality for other coworking providers in Kassel looks different. Aman Asef's "work-oasis Kassel" was also difficult to gain a foothold. Since the opening in 2011, the demand for hourly useful jobs has been disappointing. Most of the few available places are already rented in the long term. Interestingly, many operators earn more with additional services such as "virtual offices" than with the core business of the coworking spaces.

Why the future could be rosy

A current study shows that only 46 percent of the operators surveyed in their coworking spaces rate the economic situation as good. The challenges are particularly great in smaller cities. Nevertheless, there is hope: the occupancy and the future expectations seem to tend up. It remains to be seen whether the trendy coworking concepts in Kassel can really make a breakthrough or whether the train has taken the right step to pull the ripcord.
