Essen starts groundbreaking research center for health and environment!
Eat.Research is now being revolutionized in the heart of the Ruhr area! Scientists have teamed up to examine the shocking effects of environmental changes on our physical and mental well -being. The brand new interdisciplinary top research center "One Health Ruhr - From Molecules to Systems" will combine molecular biology, water research, molecular cancer research and cognitive neuroscience. And that's just the beginning! 14 new research professorships are planned to raise science to a completely new level.
This innovative center is the first of a total of four research centers that are launched by Research Alliance Ruhr. The alliance, which was founded in 2021, consists of the Ruhr University Bochum, the Technical University of Dortmund and the University of Duisburg-Essen. With an impressive promotion of 75 million euros by the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Science, the foundation for health research is laid that benefits man directly. Another 48 million euros are to follow by 2025!
The environment as a health factor
The research center will deal intensively with the basic mechanisms that maintain both physical and mental functions. The focus here is on disorders that can trigger diseases. Professor Dirk Schadendorf, the director of the center and head of the Dermatology Clinic at the University Hospital Essen, explains that the scientists are researching how pollutants in the water contribute to cancer and how the design of ecosystems can contribute to the promotion of mental health.
Especially in industrially shaped regions such as the Ruhr area, the renaturation of water could be both medically and psychologically of enormous value. "Our goal is to understand the environment as an essential health factor and to develop sustainable strategies to promote physical and mental health in the region," emphasizes Schadendorf. The future of health research is at stake - and the Ruhr area could soon be in the spotlight!
