Alarming warning: Energy drinks dangerous for young people!
The Association for Consumer Information (VKI) has once again urged the dangers of caffeine -containing energy drinks, which are particularly popular with young people. The “Holy Energy” brand currently discussed offers its products in powder form. A single portion bag contains as much caffeine as two doses Red Bull and thus exceeds the recommended daily dose for children and adolescents with a weight of less than 53 kg, as reported by the Austrian Agency for Health and Nutrition Security (AGE). There are 160 milligrams of caffeine per bag, which is to be mixed with half a liter of water, which can be potentially dangerous for young consumers, since caffeine can cause unpleasant side effects such as shortness of breath and anxiety.
harmful ingredients and lack of education
Energy drinks contain not only high amounts of caffeine, but also taurine - an organic acidity that is widespread in the food industry. According to consumer advocates, the consumption of these drinks is harmful to young people. Experts, including the ecotrophologist Iris Laqua, confirm that many students get in touch with these drinks early on. Energy drinks are particularly popular in the eighth or ninth grade, but most young people are aware of the health risks, as Laqua explains. Permanent consumers often suffer from insomnia, racing heart and other serious health restrictions.
A study by the German Consumer Center emphasizes that a typical 0.5-liter box of Energy Drink contains around 20 pieces of cubes and about 160 milligrams of caffeine. This can exceed the permissible maximum amount of caffeine for a young person with a body weight of 50 kilograms. According to the pediatrician and cardiologist Dr. Martin Hulpke bet is currently missing effective legal regulations for the protection of young people, since Energy drinks are sold freely-very different from alcohol and tobacco. The existing warnings are often printed tiny and are therefore hardly recognizable. It is required to take these health risks seriously and take appropriate measures to better protect children and adolescents, such as ZDF reported .
