Security for women: demands for more protection in politics!

In the debate about the security of women in urban rooms, several relevant points were recently addressed. The women's union has increasingly required measures to increase security for women in the city. This concern encounters general approval in politics, where violence against women is regarded as a structural and epidemic problem. A central aspect in the discussion is the need for legislative action against this form of violence.

In addition, a report on the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution 1325 shows that women play a central role in conflict prevention and peace promotion. This resolution, which was adopted in 2000, includes four pillars: prevention, protection, participation as well as emergency aid and reconstruction. To date, 105 states, including Switzerland, have taken measures to implement this resolution.

In Switzerland, the National Action Plan (NAP) 1325 is used for practical implementation. The federal government has been developing the 5th National Action Plan since spring 2024, with three Swiss peace organizations, including Frieda, being demanding the participation of civil society priorities in this new NAP. These organizations have published the report “Uno-Resolution 1325. Women, peace, security: Civil society priorities for the 5th Swiss National Action Plan”.

The report contains recommendations that aim to promote a feminist understanding of security in politics and society. The fight against structural causes of crises and conflicts as well as the prevention of violence against women, girls and queer people is emphasized. To strengthen the participation of these groups in peace -political and security -relevant topics, a departure from traditional security concepts to feminist principles is also required, such as frieda.org
