In 2025,In the Leopold Museum, an exciting program for art lovers will be implemented, which focuses particularly on the late work of the important Austrian expressionist Egon Schiele. From March 28th, the exhibition "Times of the upheaval. Egon Schiele's last years" will open. This show, which includes around 120 works, illuminates Schiele's last phase of life and its artistic development. The artist, who succumbed to Spanish flu at the age of 28 in 1918, is examined in this retrospective as a significant reflection artist who put the search for identity and the presentation of couples at the center of his work, such as ots.at reported.
extension of the collection
In 2024, the Leopold Museum was able to include 315 new works of art in its inventory through donations and purchases, the total value of which amounts to around 15 million euros. These valuable entrances include works of prominent artists such as Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoschka, which makes the collection one of the most comprehensive of its kind. According to director Hans-Peter Wipplinger, the continuous expansion of the collection is a central task of the museum in order to secure and promote the cultural relevance, as can be seen in the news on leopoldmuseum.org
The exhibitions planned in 2025 also include "Biedermeier. An era during the start", which gives insights into the art and society of this time from April 10th. In addition, the fascination of the occult around 1900 will be discussed in another exhibition, which will be presented from September 4th. These artistic experiences complement the already established permanent exhibition "Vienna 1900. Departure into the modernity", which comprehensively portrays Vienna's cultural life around 1900 and houses the most important Schiele collection worldwide.
