Klagenfurt and Co.: These Carinthian train stations inspire passengers!

Around 14,400 passengers rated the train stations in Austria as part of the VCÖ station test. The survey included 15 different criteria, so that a comprehensive picture of the experience and expectations of travelers can be given. The best train station in state capitals is the Vienna Westbahnhof, followed by St. Pölten and Salzburg. Klagenfurt Hauptbahnhof takes sixth place and is particularly valued for its accessibility by public transport and its accessibility.

However, there are also suggestions for improvement. Passengers want better cleanliness, more toilets, bike parking spaces and charging options for electric cars at the Klagenfurt train station. However, the city was positive because the main train station occupies a central position in the transport network. It also becomes clear that 36% of Carinthian passengers go to the train station on foot, use 23% public transport, and only arrive 6% by bike.

Other rankings of the train stations

Under the larger train stations outside the state capitals, the Hermagor train station takes eighth place, with Spittal-Millstättersee in tenth place. The latter received good reviews in the areas of accessibility, cleanliness and building design. The St. Paul train station in the Lavanttal is also mentioned positively, while Villach main station is one of the ten most beautiful train stations outside of state capitals and taking eighth place.

Freedom of access in the focus

The importance of accessibility should not be underestimated, especially in the design of public transport. On behalf of the Federal Ministry, the Austrian Research Society Mobility (FGM) has created a comprehensive guide to the barrier -free design of public transport. Legal framework, guidelines and frequent barriers in public transport were taken into account. This guide, which is currently being revised by the working group accessibility of Austrian scientific society, is intended to serve experts as a work impairment.

It comprises seven parts that describe various requirements for barrier -free stops, station bridges, trams and railway vehicles. The requirements are based on legal regulations and expert recommendations, whereby a differentiation between the types of traffic is not made. The guide is viewed as a lively process and is open to new technological and organizational solutions. Users are invited to actively support the further development of the guide.

The results of the VCÖ station test not only show the current strengths and weaknesses of the train stations, but also emphasize the importance of continuously improving and adapting public transport in order to meet the needs of all passengers. The requirements for accessibility in particular play a central role in the future of traffic in Carinthia and all of Austria.

For more information, the individual report can be found on the train stations and the suggestions for Barrier -free.
