Chancellor Kickl in sight: concerns and protests awaken fears in Austria!
Austria is at a turning point: FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl, who led his party to the top in the last surveys, has to accept a first setback before taking over the Chancellery. According to a current survey by Lazarsfeld Society, which was carried out for OE24, Kickl loses three percentage points and is now 26 %. Despite this dent, however, he remains unmatched at the head of the Chancellor's question, while interim chancellor Alexander Schallenberg ranked far behind him with 12 % and SPÖ boss Andreas Babler. In view of the coalition negotiations between the FPÖ and the ÖVP, which were able to make progress, the Chancellery is within reach for Kickl, as is also reported on Tagesschau.de.
fears in the population
The possibility that Kickl will actually become a chancellor has triggered concern in the Austrian population. Last Thursday, thousands demonstrated in front of the Federal Chancellery in Vienna to express their fear of a government under Kickl's leadership. The Jewish community in particular expresses concerns that a government, which is crossed by right -wing ideologies, represents a threat. Alon Ishay, President of the Jewish University, described the situation as the potentially "right -wing government that has existed in Austria since 1945". At the same time, numerous people from other minorities fear a deterioration in their situation under the FPÖ government.
The FPÖ also has extensive plans that are connected to a potential government under Kickl. These include an end to the Russia sanctions and the proposal to reform public service broadcasting. Especially in the LGBTQ+community there is concern that a black and blue government could undermine the rights of queer people. Ann-Sophie Otte, chair of the lesbian and gay association, emphasizes that in society there are already hate crimes in society and the risk that queer-hostile measures will not be ignored.
