Habeck inspires in Göttingen: Greens for climate money and social justice!
In the run-up to the 2025 federal election, the Greens presented their candidate for chancellor Robert Habeck in Göttingen. According to that Göttingen Tageblatt Habeck visited the town hall, where he was flanked by the direct candidates Karoline Otte and Viola von Cramon. The event achieved high demand right from the start, meaning that many interested parties had to wait in front of the hall. Some were left out due to overcrowding, while peaceful demonstrators protested outside the hall. The police had to intervene to control troublemakers.
Habeck entered the hall slightly late at 3:15 p.m. Above the stage was the slogan "One person. One word." There was a conflict-free atmosphere inside the town hall while Otte and von Cramon promoted a program that would combine climate protection and social justice. Habeck was celebrated like a pop star by his supporters, and his hour-long speech was very well received.
Topics of the speech and political outlook
In his speech, Habeck discussed, among other things, youth football, civic engagement and the dangers of populism. He also criticized the influence of social media on society and promised an investment program to improve public spaces. The simplification of tax returns and tax relief for companies were also discussed. Habeck contrasted his approach with the CDU, which wants to relieve the burden on entrepreneurs, and took a clear position on the social market economy and climate change.
The popularity of the Greens is also reflected in the polls: According to the ZDF political barometer, the Greens received 15 percent of the vote. Habeck is aware of his underdog position, but is optimistic about the future. 27 percent of those surveyed can imagine both Friedrich Merz and Robert Habeck as chancellors.
Habeck's election campaign also includes innovative ideas for financing and socially acceptable regulations. How ZDF reported, Habeck plans to use the climate money in the election campaign, with people with low and middle incomes receiving back a large part of the income from CO2 pricing. The introduction of climate money should take place “as quickly as possible” in the next legislative period, after payment was already provided for in the 2021 coalition agreement, but this failed due to technical difficulties.
From 2025 onwards, a per capita climate money payment is planned. The Greens also intend to make climate protection measures socially acceptable and are prepared to take on debt to achieve this. Furthermore, a billionaire tax is intended to generate income for important projects such as school renovations. Other measures include government support for the purchase of electric cars and proposals to support driving licenses for trainees. The federal election, however, could take place again on February 23rd.
