The new Abbot of Göttweig: Hope and Spirituality for the Future!

Am Göttweiger Berg, where monks have been praying and working for over 900 years, the Benedictine Abbot Göttweig is led by Abbot Patrick Schöder, which highlights the spiritual importance of this institution in our modern, secular society. According to noe.orf.at it is important to the new abbot that every guest, be it for a day or for several days, leaves the monastery with a feeling of meaning and fulfillment. "I find spirituality very important," explains Abbot Patrick and emphasizes the important role of the monastery as a retreat.

The way of abbot

Abbot Patrick Schöder, born in 1983 in Durban, South Africa, has had an impressive career behind him. After studying theology and religious education, he joined the Benedictine Abbey Göttweig in 2006, where he was completed the eternal profession in 2010 and was ordained a priest in 2011. He was active in various parishes and took over the student pastoral in Krems in 2013. His career is characterized by commitment and deep faith, as Stiftgoettweig reports.

Although the number of monks has dropped in many monasteries, Göttweig with 32 monks is one of the larger foundations of Austria. Abbot Patrick is optimistic about the future of the Catholic Church in a changing society and plans to further position the monastery as a tourism magnet. A new abbey beer based on an old recipe from 1499 is planned, which is supposed to be another attraction for around 150,000 annual visitors.
